'Everyone is equal, but some are more equal than others?'
(The Purdah Press is a artists response to the theme of 'democracy'. To be handed out on the 7th of May. This work will be featured as part of this publication.)
As a child I was given an animated DVD of Animal Farm. Based upon the George Orwell novel in which animals are used as a construct to expose the corruption and greed within the ruling classes of the Communist State.
At first for me Animal Farm was simply a cartoon with
talking animals. But as I became older it became to mean much more. Orwell’s
message for Communism and the Western World of the immediate Post war era may
now seem dated. Yet for me it is still relevant to the way political ideas can
still be manipulated today.
As we stand on the eve of a General Election the famous line
from Animal Farm, ‘Everyone is equal, but some are more equal than others’
comes to mind.
The Communist state has been consigned to history and we may
congratulate ourselves on living in a “free” world. But our precious democracy
could be seen as an alternative Animal Farm. One in which the puppet master of
wealth, privilege, status and greed still pull the strings. Is ours now a
Democracy in which everyone’s vote is equal, but some will always strive to
remain more influential than others?
